More bad publicity for Hypnosis!

I rented a video from the library, called 'Captive Minds Hypnosis and Behond' it was one I had seen before... I am outraged in fact I think I will be writing a letter to them....
Needless to say they did talk about hypnosis for about 20mins. They then went on to talk about cults, and the mere idea that they placed these two things in the same video appuled me... Given the video was done in the 1980's I feel this urge to have it removed from the self from the library as anyone who doesn't know about hypnosis and watches that so called info will only be more skeptical then before....

I will say though it did give a good description on how suseptable the mind can be....

I am I wrong to be so outraged?
p.s. It was a Canadian Production so go figure.. I may be a Canadian but even I ll be the first to say we aren't the greatest film producers if you know what i mean!

In the 1980's hypnosis was being used to a large extend in the false accusations of child abuse and was tied to recollected memories of Satanic Ritual Abuse. And so these psychologists, psychiatrists, and other sers of hypnosis were actually in many cases the abusers of the clients.... A log an sorid history in hypnosis.... fortuantly the 80's are behind us...

It's just not quite as easy to find. :-) Really, there is just no way getting around the fact that there will always be a certain portion of the population who equate hypnosis with mind control cults or satantic practices or worse . . . however, when we are confronted with such ideas, our best strategy is polite rebuttal, reference to credible counter-sources, and then disengagement.

Permalink Reply by georgina cannon on August 19, 2008 at 4:22pm: Not wrong to be upset, but everything becomes outdated after a while, including books. I have some old hypnosis books also that are quite ridiculous.

However, to make things a little better, we have produced a History of Hypnosis DVD which has just been published (launched at the NGH convention). Maurice Kershaw - who as you probably know - is charming, funny, knowledgeable and really interesting, gives the 2 DVD lecture on the history of hypnosis from the tombs of Egypt to the present day. We will be providing copies in libraries as soon as we can. Also to schools..... for more info just let me know.

I also think that it would be bennifical to hit the streets with a camcorder and find out what exactly today's public's opion and understandings are of hypnosis in today's sociaty... hmmm there's an idea!

What would you be doing instead if you weren't outraged?

What harm has this video done to you (as distinct from what you've done to yourself while watching it) for you to feel this way?
